Abstract | While schools are focusing excessively on meeting accountability standards and improving test scores, important facets of schooling--such as preparing students for the global marketplace--are being inadvertently overlooked. Without deliberate informal observation by teachers and school administrators, detecting and addressing students' deficiencies in their world outlook will be an increasing challenge in this era of globalization. Schools play the primary role in developing and shaping students' knowledge, skills, and dispositions to function effectively in society. As educators, they observe such deficiencies in global perspectives either formally (through tests) or informally (through conversations and the way students react to situations.) By reflecting on the information they gain through deliberate, informal observation in their students, they can draw lessons that may help them overcome the challenges of preparing their students for a global marketplace.
